Sewage backup is not a fun problem to have. Sewage is  considered category 3 water. Did you know that there are different types of water. 

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on the length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or stream, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

5. Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.

1. To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
2. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
3. Postpone outdoor activities.
4. Remember the 30/30 Lighting Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lighting, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
5. Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
6. Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lighting strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
7. Remember, rubbed-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lighting. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
8. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.

Stains can make a carpet appear more soiled that it really is, so no carpet cleaning method is complete unless all removable stains have disappeared.

 Follow these tips below:

1. Always blot or scrape up as much as possible before it soaks into the carpet.

2. For blotting liquids, use white paper towels or tissues. You can use a cloth, but it is not recommended. If used too long, the matter soaked into the cloth will re-deposit into the fibers and spread the stain.

3. For scrapping solid matter, use a table knife or SERVPRO scraper. Never use a sharp instrument.

4. Never use soap. This frequently leaves a sticky residue that causes rapid re-soiling.

5. Do not allow solvent-based products to penetrate to the backing. The might damage and soften the latex compound used to strengthen the carpet baking.

We moved into our new home and within weeks were faced with a flooded basement ...a flooded finished basement I might add.

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on the length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or stream, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

SERVPRO of Vincennes recently received a call from a senior living community who had experienced major water damage due to their roof being trapped incorrectly. 

Within the hour crews were at the building starting to extract water and demo out the affected area. It took three days to fully extract, demo and dry all of the affected areas. The directors of the facility were so pleased with the turn around time and the how hard the crews worked everyday.

However, flash forward two weeks and 3 inches of rain later and SERVPRO of Vincennes received another call for water damage due to their roof still leaking. Within the hour crews were at the building starting to extract water and demo out the affected area.

Our goal at SERVPRO of Vincennes after a fire is to make "it like it never even happened." But firefighters are the real heroes here in Vincennes Indiana. They are always the first ones to run into danger to save and protect others. 

There is no gift, pay, or words that could repay firefighters. We wanted to do our best to tell them "thank you" here in Knox County Indiana. We are providing a meal for the county and city fire departments here at our building located at 712 Upper 11th Street. Our goal is to serve them and to enjoy a meal together, thanking them for their service. We hope to make this a yearly tradition and to host this meal every year the week of fire prevention week.

If we were in a classroom setting we would ask everyone to raise their hands if they knew if there were different types of water during a water damage. From our experience, most people wouldn't know that there are three types of water. 

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. A SERVPRO of Vincennes professional will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

Category 1: "Clean Water"

We are here to help you no matter the size of the disaster...from needing your carpet cleaned to a home that has been flooded. We want to serve you. Unfortunately here in Vincennes, flooding could occur from the Wabash river. That is particularly important for carpets. After they become soaked, the glue holding the layers together weakens significantly, and delamination, or separation of the layers, can occur. Our crews here at SERVPRO of Vincennes know to carefully monitor all three components to prevent tearing carpets apart, as well as overheating the already damaged wood floorboards, cracking and splintering them.

After completing water removal, our technician then lift the carpets, remove the carpet pad, and dry the floor using air movers and fans to force warm air over and under the carpet while also drawing out the damp air and sending it outside the nearest window or another exit. Once completed, they insert a new pad and then stretch the carpet back in place.

Preparing for a storm can be intmidating, let us give you some tips to make the process a lot easier for you.

Before The Storm:

1. Build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
2. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
3. Postpone outdoor activities.
4. Remember the 30/30 Lighting Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lighting, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
5. Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
6. Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lighting strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
7. Remember, rubbed-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lighting. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
8. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
9. Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

1. Lock your windows and doors.

This may sound like a no brainer, but statistics have shown that roughly 30% of home invasions are unforced entry, so check those doors and windows a few times before you leave. It doesn’t hurt to check, double check, and triple check!

2. Shut your water off.

3. Be smart on social media.

Who doesn’t post their family pictures on the beach, or make a snapchat story all about the wonderful time you and your family are having on vacation? Most people do, without thinking twice. But unfortunately, doing this can notify burglars when you aren't at home. It’s like putting a sign up in your front yard saying "break in! We aren't home!” Consider posting images after your trip, or temporarily creating a Facebook picture album that can only be viewed by the people you select.

4. Make your home look lived in.

Ask the post office to hold your mail, and hold your newspapers. An overflowing mail box can be an indication of an empty home! If you have a neighbor or friend that can take out the garbage and put the cans back after the garbage is picked up, it will send the message that everything is proceeding normally at your house. Also, consider buying light timers. You get can get a pack of two for as little as $8.50 on Amazon.

5. Pull those plugs!

I was the QUEEN of this in college, while living on a college budget. This will save you money while you’re gone and will ease your mind of questioning whether or not you turned off the coffee pot. Turn off/unplug your garage door, this is also an effective way to keep thieves from opening it with a universal remote.

6. Keep your lawn maintained.

 If you are gone for more than a few days, make sure your lawn is maintained. Once again, make your house look lived in!

7. Put your valuables in a safety deposit box.

Consider leaving your valuables in a safety deposit box at your bank. Not only will this protect your valuable items from robbers, but also from a fire. You could put your important documents and family images on a hard drive and store that in the safety deposit box too.

In the early 1970s, the founders of SERVPRO used a color chip paint sample chart to identify the most eye-catching color. It was a highly technical process. The founders showed the chart to as many as they could and they asked, "Which color on this chart would be impossible to miss?" By a wide margin, the color most identified was 1970 rally green, a color used on Porsche 911 automobiles.

Did you Know there are Different Types of Smoke?

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Vincennes will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. Why we Chose SERVPRO of Vincennes Part One

Hello from The Drewes family! I (Morgan) wanted to write a special blog post about our family and why we chose SERVPRO. My husband, Danny has really always been an entrepreneur at heart. He started his own mowing business as soon as he could drive and it really took off from there. He is a worker. I knew this as soon as we met in college. He used to drive 4 hours home from college every weekend to mow his customers yards. He was committed.

Fast forward to today. He still mows. On top of owning SERVPRO and being the general manager, he is mowing in the evenings and on the weekends because he enjoys it. 

You might wonder why Danny didn't invest into mowing and making that a full time job. He saw an opportunity in SERVPRO while working under Dave Wolfe (Owner of SERVPRO of Effingham Illinois) and he ran with it. We would all laugh and say that he decided to drag his parents and myself into it too.

Meet The State Farm Andrew Hinz Office!

Danny and I arrived at the Andrew Hinz State Farm office to a busy waiting area first thing in the morning. I knew the theme of this office even before Andrew told me what it was: relationships and community. Paige Lee was working out their mission at the front desk going above and beyond to help the customers, which didn’t surprise me at all. They are “In the community and for the community,” as Andrew would say. They not only say it, but they put it into practice. Who hasn’t seen Andrew and Paige at a Lincoln High School basketball game handing out checks? Their support is huge for our community, and their office teamwork is incredible.

When speaking with Andrew about his company, the word “ethical” came up. It is a powerful word, and it rings true in this office. Andrew said “Everything we do is right by the client, even if we make less money because of it. We work for the community.”

Andrew is the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Vincennes and will be the President starting July 1st! He is also involved in Junior Achievement, which teaches children how money, careers, and business ownership work by volunteering and providing mentorship. Andrew and his wife, Lauren, met at Murray State University and have planted their own roots here in Vincennes with their son. Andrew said they are here to stay. Lauren is the Title I Lead Teacher at Vigo Elementary School. You can tell how much Andrew adores Lauren as he spoke about her patience and kindness. These two are a power couple.

 “Chess Squares”….We had to look this one up! Google defines them as a “classic

Southern treat” with a flaky upper crust and a soft, browned, cake-like bottom crust. I was sold at butter and sugar. You must look these up and make them! I know I’m planning on it.

• Remove excess moisture with a wet-dry vacuum and dry out the building as quickly

• Use fans to assist in the drying process.
• Clean wet materials and surfaces with
detergent and water.
• Discard all water damaged materials.
• Discard all materials visibly contaminated
with mold.
• Remove and discard all porous materials
that have been wet for more than 48 hours.
Porous materials cannot be cleaned and
may remain a source of mold growth.
These materials include the following:
1. Carpeting and carpet padding;
2. Upholstery, wallpaper, drywall;

I can always tell that this is a tight-knit office that values family. The late Kelly Jones opened the original office in 2003; he will always be missed. 1. Before an emergency happens, locate the shut-off valve for the water line that enters your house and label this valve with a tag for easy identification. Make sure all household members know where it is located.
2. Make sure this valve can be completely shut off. Your valve may be rusted open or it may only partially close. If so, replace it.
3. Cracked lines may pollute the water supply to your house. It is wise to shut off your water until you hear from authorities that it is safe for drinking.
4. The effects of gravity may drain the water in your hot water heater and toilet tanks unless you trap it in your house by shutting off the main house valve. (This is not the street valve in the cement box at the curb – the street valve is extremely difficult to turn and requires a special tool.)

Every time I walk into Pete Barry’s office I feel so welcomed. The office is warm and inviting, and we always pick up right where we left off. Halisa, Lori, and Pete are some of the kindest people I have met, they are really fun too. I never leave that office without a laugh or smile on my face. I always joke with them about “going LIVE” on facebook. I am pretty sure that I will never convince them, especially Lori, she was hiding in the bathroom when I told them I needed a picture. I did convince them to get a picture though :)

Let’s talk about Pete…

Pete and his wife, Jenny, met at the University of Evansville, the rest is history! They have been married for 27 years! They have two children, Ryan, and Rachel. Both Ryan and Rachel are nineteen years old and attending college. I am sure by now you are guessing they are twins, well they aren’t ! Pete has such a genuine and kind heart as I am sure his lovely wife does too. It was no surprise to me when Pete told me they fostered children and adopted Ryan and Rachel. They began fostering children after adopting their two children. I never get sick of hearing adoption stories of families beginning with love and seeing their story unfold.

Believe it or not, Pete did not always work in the insurance field. Pete grew up in the grocery business, he worked in a grocery store for nine years. He later moved into food sales. He delivered for Little Debbies for seven years and then worked in management for seven years. Pete spoke about his past work experiences with so much joy. It was very obvious that he was thankful for his experience and all that he had learned from each position. Pete Barry took over the Vincennes Allstate office in October of 2008.

Pete’s team consists of Halisa and Lori. Halisa (pictured on the left) has been with Pete for four years. She is such a bright and fun person to speak with. She is actually getting married in May! Lori (pictured on the right) has been at Allstate for 20+ years, I was so impressed when I found that out. She is always making me laugh, dodging my photos, and ready for all all of my facebook games! I am telling you, this office is a fun place to be. I always look forward to seeing these three.

I finished up asking Pete a few more questions:

I am a reader, I am reading two different books right now. One is a book about St. Peter, and the other one I am reading is called Salvation History

• What about TV?

My daughter got me hooked on this show called “Victoria” it's all about Queen Victoria. We just finished season one. We are waiting for season two. My wife also got me hooked on “Man in the High Castle.”

• Do you have a favorite type of music?

I like Contemporary Christian music.

All About SERVPRO Dan

If you have ever seen Danny at work, you know he is doing a million different things at once and somehow making it all work. I joke about wanting to be inside his head for just one day, I can’t imagine all the more I would learn about SERVPRO.

If you know anything about SERVPRO, you have heard the name Dave Wolfe. He is one of the best of the best SERVPRO Franchisees. He and his wife, Angie Wolfe have been SERVPRO owners at SERVPRO of Effingham, Mattoon, and Charleston for many years. It is easy to say that Danny learned from the very best, both through knowledge and character.

Danny’s dad, Leonard (one of our owners) was on the phone with Dave at a time when he needed some extra hands at SERVPRO. Danny became that extra help. He started at the very bottom learning the in and out of the business. He learned quickly that the days are long, but the work is rewarding.

Danny worked for Dave during his college years working in the summer and Christmas breaks. He also completed his internship with Dave at SERVPRO of Effingham, Mattoon, and Charleston. He worked directly under Kurt McKnelly, one of Dave’s best guys. Danny knew immediately, SERVPRO was a career path he wanted to pursue.

Danny accepted a full time position with Dave’s Large loss team upon finishing his Bachelors degree in business. Danny was part of the clean up of Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irene, and the tornadoes in Joplin. He also assisted in flooding in Cleveland, a tropical storm in New Orleans, a tornado in Branson, and a commercial fire throughout the midwest.

Traveling has it’s ups and downs, but Danny truly loved it. He saw himself pursing large loss for many years until a SERVPRO close to home went on the market. After bathing the decision in prayer, Danny and his wife Morgan, along with his parents (Mary and Leonard Drewes) purchased SERVPRO of Vincennes and began using Danny’s experience and wisdom from Dave Wolfe to create an environment in Knox County Indiana to serve others, and serve them well.

Agent Spotlight- Meeks Insurance

      Until recently I had not had the privilege to sit down with Brent and Beth Meeks and just talk. They own three insurance agencies, and two real estate companies, honestly, they are extremely busy people. If you drive past their office in Vincennes on a Saturday or Sunday, you are sure to see their vehicles in the parking lot. If I had to use one word to describe these two it would be, driven.

      You get it, they work a lot. But sit down with them for a few minutes and you will immediately see, family is the most important thing to them. Brent and Beth have been married for 26 years. We all laughed when they couldn't believe it had been that long...that is a LONG time. Brent's parents have almost been married for 50 years. In today's world, that is hard to find. Brent was born and raised in Knox County, and Beth was born and raised in Lawrenceville. One of my favorite parts about my time with these two was finding out what Beth did after she graduated high school...keep reading, I will get to that.  They have two daughters, Payton and Chelsea.  It was so refreshing hearing Brent and Beth talk about their children. They are very proud of both girls, as they should be.

       Chelsea recently joined her parent’s team working at Meeks. I was impressed to learn that she played professional basketball in Germany. Both Brent and Beth had so many wonderful things to say about both girls. From their intelligence, work ethic, athletic abilities, and most importantly, their hearts. I was excited to Meet Payton during my interview. She was extremely sweet and definitely a huge help organizing files in the Meeks office. Beth said," Payton is your girl when you need to rid stuff out!"  Payton is a sophomore in College and plays for the golf team, she helps her parents out on her college breaks.

 Let’s talk about their business.

1.    What are some positive and negative aspects of owning your own businesses?

Brent- You can have the freedom to leave when you want to leave, but at the same time, sometimes you have to be here when you don’t want to be. I enjoy the day to day stuff, and the interaction with people in the community.

2. Tell me more about your business?

Beth-We opened up a scratch insurance agency on May 1st, 2002. I had been in real estate twenty years before we opened Meeks. At times, with the girls’ sports schedule, we were always busy, always on the go.  I drove the bus, and Brent coached. We met so many of our clients and employees through the years at sporting events. It has really been a nice ride. When it comes to work,  I drive the business in and Brent takes care of it. We are in the business to help people find the perfect fit for them, we aren’t selling just to sell. We want to help people.

3.What is one of your favorite things about Knox County?

Beth-Raising a family.

Brent-Absolutely, raising a family.

4.What is one of your favorite restaurants in the area?

Beth and Brent- Gilberts. They have good food for extremely reasonable prices and something for everyone.

5. What is something not many know about you two?

Beth- Brent is the decorator. I say do whatever you like when it comes to decorating. I drove a semi for a year and a half after she graduated high school. It was definitely an experience.

        We finished up our interview talking about shopping, you can’t end on a better note. The Meeks plan to take a family trip to one of my favorite boutiques, Glamour Farms, located in Louisville, Illinois ( I hear their daughter, Payton, is the shopper).  It was truly a pleasure sitting down with Brent and Beth. Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.  When I walk into the office, a cloud of peppermint hits me in the face, followed by three huge smiles. Besides the kind hearted people, it’s one of my favorite things about Brian Stephens Insurance Agency. The neutral hues with the addition of the bright red wall in Brian’s office also makes me feel so at home. These kind hearted people are the ones you want to surround yourself with. If we all didn’t have a full schedule, I would make it a priority to stop in and say hi every day. They might get annoyed with me. Although I could drop off breakfast, I hear Brian drinks a Mt. Dew and eats a snickers candy bar every morning…got to start the day off right, the more sugar, the better!

 Tell me about yourself: I have been married for thirty-one years, to my lovely wife Doreen. We were high school sweethearts, we met at North Knox. We have twin sons, Jeremy who is dating, Emily, and Josh who is married to Tiffany. We also have a daughter, Bailey, who is married to our son-in-law, Casey. They are all the best thing that has happened to me. I love them to death.

 Are you a reader: I have actually been trying to read the same book for the past seven years. I love to read, but I fall asleep. One or two pages into it, I’m out! Actually, I just told my wife I am going to start listening to podcasts. Every time I am out driving, it would be so easy just told turn a podcast on and listen to it.

 What am I listening to: Well, I like about everything, I like the Eagles. Old Crow, REO, and CCR. Even Frank Sinatra, actually, every Friday my boys will send a snap chat to me with Frank playing in the background and they say “Friday’s with Frank.” It never fails, I will get one at some point in time throughout the day.

 Best food in town: I love Bobes pizza, that is definitely a favorite here. Vincennes has a lot of good food, but honestly, my wife’s cooking is the best in town. She makes the best homemade salsa.

 Favorite thing about Knox County/Vincennes: I like the people. I have worked in large cities before, including Chicago, and Atlanta. Those are neat places to visit, but I wouldn’t trade the people here in Knox County for anything.

 Tell me about your team: I have three very qualified people, Erica, Sandy, and Britni. They are not only qualified, they are knowledgeable, and most importantly, they are sincere about what they are doing. People come in just to talk to them. They really do care for the customers, they aren’t just trying to sell something. They always have the best interest for the customer. That is one of the many things I love about my team. I can’t say enough good things about these ladies. The past year and a half they were extremely supportive as I have been out of the office to be with my wife. It was a tough year and a half as we fought for Doreen’s health. I didn’t worry about the office one time, I knew they had everything under control.

Why Insurance? What interested you in the field: I’ve done a little bit of everything. I’ve gone from managing, to owning a business, to opening up Brian Stephens Insurance Agency. I really enjoy the insurance field. I have been the Washington Township Trustee since 2000. My dad was actually the Washington Township Trustee too. Insurance to me is my way of expanding that to help all of the people in Knox County.

 Tell me about your newest opportunity in Kentucky: We were offered the opportunity to open up an office in Kentucky to represent Erie. Erie is new in the state of Kentucky. We saw this as a great opportunity. People are not as aware of Erie in Kentucky because it is so new, which has been one of the challenging parts. But Erie is so competitive, and they are an A+ rated company, which makes it much easier to open up an agency.

 What is something you want people to know about you: I love our four legged children, Miss Pearl, Haus, and Otis. We named him Otis off the Andy Griffith Show. They are part of the family.

 Brian Stephens Insurance Agency is located right on Hart Street. He bought the land on May 26^th, 2010, and moved into his new office in August! Things moved quickly, Brian got to work, and he has been busy ever since! Thankful Hearts

Thankfulness is in the air here at SERVPRO. We are grateful for such an amazing year of business. We serve so many amazing communities and wonderful people, we truly have so much to be thankful for. 

This year has been a wild ride! We have learned many lessons, gained wisdom, and trusted the Lord for his plan to prevail even when things did not go as planned. To God be the glory.

We have an amazing team that meshes well in all circumstances. When you have a solid team,  everything else works. It has taken us a long time to gain this team!

We know professionalism and we strive for excellence, but we also know how to have fun. Work has to be enjoyable, and we all know how to have a good laugh. Thank YOU for letting SERVPRO of Vincennes serve you. We are forever grateful!

Community Spotlight: The Dutch Pantry

One of the best aspects of our office is our different strengths. We are all completely different and unique. However, there is one thing we ALWAYS agree on. Food. We don’t skip lunch. We don’t skip any meal for that matter. Or birthdays, here at SERVPRO we believe in cake, and a lot of it!

Our “go-to” place for the lunch is The Dutch Pantry here in Vincennes. To say their food is delicious is an understatement. The cold meat sandwiches with homemade bread are the best we have ever had. We are regulars. You can buy their bread, lunch meat, and cheese too. Which means you can enjoy the deliciousness at home, whenever you want! I’m a little obsessed if you can’t tell ;)!

The Dutch Pantry began in the heart of Southern Indiana’s Amish and Mennonite Community 15 years ago. Years later, they began serving the Vincennes area.

Just this week I was able to visit their first store in Odon. If you need spices, candy, jams, or baked goods, this place is your one stop shop. I was in dessert heaven when I walked in the door. The cinnamon rolls are THE BEST and their coffee cake gives my mom’s a run for her money (sorry mom, you still have the best).

Ok enough about their food, I am sure everyone reading this is hungry now. Their service is what I really wanted to talk about. They are some of the kindest, sweetest, ladies I have ever met. They are genuine too, which is my favorite part. They treat me the exact same way every time I walk in the door. Work can be stressful, so it’s really refreshing walking in their doors knowing the same service I am going to get. They make me feel like an old friend. Thank you for serving our community and serving it well. We appreciate you!

Storm Damage: How to prepare for a storm.

With technology today, we can usually predict when a large storm is going to hit. Here are some helpful tips to prepare you and your loved ones for a storm.

1. Tune into your local weather radio station, TV channel, or app.

2. Depending on the type of storm, you must evaluate your situation.

• Your location matters. You need to find a safe place that offers shelter.

3. Create an emergency plan.

• Know where you are going (locate fast exit points or where to stay)

• Memorize emergency phone numbers

4. Prepare an emergency kit. Each kit should include:

• Flashlights

• Batteries

• Non perishable foods

• Water bottles

• Blankets

• First Aid Kit (essential medications)

5. Prepare your home.

• Make sure your insurance is adequate

• Learn how to safely turn off your power, gas, and water

• Remove tree branches or other dangers close to your home

• Check your roof and gutters clear

What does Helping His Hands organization do?

Helping His Hands Disaster Response is a disaster relief organization that is located in Vincennes, IN  who focuses not on the obvious disasters that could possibly happen in person's life but on the less obvious, such as hunger. Helping His Hands disburses food and other products to Knox County members every Wednesday 9-11 a.m., the first and third Thursdays from 4-5:45 p.m., and the first and third Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. Helping His Hands feeds roughly 1,400 people from 400 different families monthly through their food pantry. 

So, how can you help?

Helping His Hands is constantly in need of food donations due to all of the many individuals that they feed. They are always looking for organizations to put on canned food drives to help benefit this community. Some products that you can donate include: canned proteins, canned fruits, 100% fruit juices, grains, bags of beans, condiments, canned vegetables, soups, multigrain cereal, gluten-free and diabeti friendly foods, and fresh produce. SERVPRO of Vincennes will be putting on a food drive in August, so come out and make a difference!

Keeping Your Home Safe While You're Away

According to FBI statistics, most communities will experience a 10 to 18 percent increase in home burglaries during the months of July and August. Most home break-ins can easily prevented. Check out some of our tips below!

1. Lock your windows and doors.

This may sound like a no brainer, but statistics have shown that roughly 30% of home invasions are unforced entry, so check those doors and windows a few times before you leave. It doesn’t hurt to check, double check, and triple check!

2. Shut your water off.

Who wants to come home after a relaxing vacation to find water standing in their home?  To prevent this from occurring, make sure you shut off your main water supply before leaving for vacation.  It will take less than 3 minutes to watch the link below and be prepared to save yourself stress and money.

3. Be smart on social media.

Who doesn’t post their family pictures on the beach, or make a snapchat story all about the wonderful time you and your family are having on vacation? Most people do, without thinking twice. But unfortunately, doing this can notify burglars when you aren't at home. It’s like putting a sign up in your front yard saying "break in! We aren't home!” Consider posting images after your trip, or temporarily creating a Facebook picture album that can only be viewed by the people you select.

4. Make your home look lived in.

Ask the post office to hold your mail, and hold your newspapers. An overflowing mail box can be an indication of an empty home! If you have a neighbor or friend that can take out the garbage and put the cans back after the garbage is picked up, it will send the message that everything is proceeding normally at your house. Also, consider buying light timers. You get can get a pack of two for as little as $8.50 on Amazon.

5. Pull those plugs!

I was the QUEEN of this in college, while living on a college budget. This will save you money while you’re gone and will ease your mind of questioning whether or not you turned off the coffee pot. Turn off/unplug your garage door, this is also an effective way to keep thieves from opening it with a universal remote.

6. Keep your lawn maintained.

 If you are gone for more than a few days, make sure your lawn is maintained. Once again, make your house look lived in!

7. Put your valuables in a safety deposit box.

Consider leaving your valuables in a safety deposit box at your bank. Not only will this protect your valuable items from robbers, but also from a fire. You could put your important documents and family images on a hard drive and store that in the safety deposit box too.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Ag Day Celebration Vincennes

We were honored being a part of the Ag Day celebration at Vincennes University this year. The event had something for everyone and only cost one dollar to attend! We were pleased to see such a big crowd celebrating agriculture.

The Indiana Farm Bureau and the Knox County Purdue Cooperative Extension office sponsored the event. The children had a wonderful time enjoying the kiddie tractor pull, petting zoo, and games, while the adults enjoyed the door prizes, vendor displays, and health screenings. All had a good time. 

We set up corn hole at our booth and gave away a YETI tumbler to whomever could score the most in a row! We had a gentleman make nine straight! We had such a great time getting to spend time out in the community talking about what we do best. Our booth had multiple resources and tips from SERVPRO informing the community on water damage tips, the water restoration process, fire damage, restoring your home after a fire, storm damage, mold remediation, sewage cleanup, and commercial water damage. We had a great time answering questions and explaining in depth what we do everyday.

Where did our color SERVPRO green come from?

Why Green? 

Have you ever wondered why green? Here at SERVPRO of Vincennes we love our green! The reason behind it...

In the early 1970s, the founders of SERVPRO used a color chip paint sample chart to identify the most eye-catching color. It was a highly technical process. The founders showed the chart to as many as they could and they asked, "Which color on this chart would be impossible to miss?" By a wide margin, the color most identified was 1970 rally green, a color used on Porsche 911 automobiles. 

None of us drive a Porsche, but if we did...of course it would be SERVPRO green!
