1. The average tornado moves southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
2. The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour, but may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour.
3. Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
4. Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.
5. Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3:00pm and 9:00pm.

1. Never drive through a flooded roadway.
2. Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
3. Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
4. Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
5. Stay away from downer power lines and report them immediately.
6. Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.

During The Storm:

1. Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
2. Avoid contact with corded phones. Cellphones are recommended.

3. Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lighting can cause serious damage.

4. Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
5. Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
6. Do not lie on concrete floors and do not learn against concrete walls.
7. Avoid natural lighting rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
8. Avoid hilltops, open fields, the bench or a boat on the water.
9. Take a shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
10. Avoid contact with anything metal-tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, gold carts, golf club, and bicycles.
11. If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.

How to prepare BEFORE a Storm hits?

Before The Storm:

1. To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
2. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
3. Postpone outdoor activities.
4. Remember the 30/30 Lighting Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lighting, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
5. Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
6. Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lighting strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
7. Remember, rubbed-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lighting. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
8. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
9. Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

With technology today, we can usually predict when a large storm is going to hit. Here are some helpful tips to prepare you and your loved ones for a storm.

1. Tune into your local weather radio station, TV channel, or app.

2. Depending on the type of storm, you must evaluate your situation.

• Your location matters. You need to find a safe place that offers shelter.

3. Create an emergency plan.

• Know where you are going (locate fast exit points or where to stay)

• Memorize emergency phone numbers

4. Prepare an emergency kit. Each kit should include:

• Flashlights

• Batteries

• Non perishable foods

• Water bottles

• Blankets

• First Aid Kit (essential medications)

5. Prepare your home.

• Make sure your insurance is adequate

• Learn how to safely turn off your power, gas, and water

• Remove tree branches or other dangers close to your home

• Check your roof and gutters clear

Did you know many people don't know how to differentiate between a tornado watch and a tornado warning? 

WATCH:

A severe thunderstorm watch means that the potential exists for the development of thunderstorms which may produce large hail or damaging winds. A watch is issued by the SPC (Storm Prediction Center).

Warning:

A severe thunderstorm warning means that a severe thunderstorm is occurring or is imminent based on Doppler radar information or a reliable spotter report. A warning is issued but the local National Weather Service office.

Our mission at SERVPRO of Vincennes is to help you after you and your family face a disaster. But, we also want to give you tips on how to prevent water and storm damage in your home. 

It is vital that all household members learn how to shut off the water at the main house valve.

1. Before an emergency happens, locate the shut-off valve for the water line that enters your house and label this valve with a tag for easy identification. Make sure all household members know where it is located.
2. Make sure this valve can be completely shut off. Your valve may be rusted open or it may only partially close. If so, replace it.
3. Cracked lines may pollute the water supply to your house. It is wise to shut off your water until you hear from authorities that it is safe for drinking.
4. The effects of gravity may drain the water in your hot water heater and toilet tanks unless you trap it in your house by shutting off the main house valve. (This is not the street valve in the cement box at the curb – the street valve is extremely difficult to turn and requires a special tool.)

Storm and Flood Damage can be devastating. Immediate action is needed for the least amount of damage to take place, and you need the company with storm damage experience. That's us, SERVPRO of Vincennes located at 712 Upper 11th street in Vincennes Indiana.

With technology today, we can usually predict when a large storm is going to hit. Here are some helpful tips to prepare you and your loved ones for a storm.

1. Tune into your local weather radio station, TV channel, or app.

2. Depending on the type of storm, you must evaluate your situation.

• Your location matters. You need to find a safe place that offers shelter.

3. Create an emergency plan.

• Know where you are going (locate fast exit points or where to stay)

• Memorize emergency phone numbers

4. Prepare an emergency kit. Each kit should include:

• Flashlights

• Batteries

• Non perishable foods

• Water bottles

• Blankets

• First Aid Kit (essential medications)

5. Prepare your home.

• Make sure your insurance is adequate

• Learn how to safely turn off your power, gas, and water

• Remove tree branches or other dangers close to your home

• Check your roof and gutters clear
